Junk, The New Antiques?

OK so! Today me and the Man had to go out to Good Will. I am cleaning out a guest room that has been unfinished for 10 yrs, yeah, thats embarrassing but it is what it is. Anywho, We went to make a hefty donation of like brand new comforters and curtains. I went through this whole comforter hording thing years ago. While the Man dropped those off I went inside. I am on a mission for a desk for my office room ( we are redoing this as well) but I want something old looking, and much smaller than I had. I will put pictures up soon no matter how embarrassing they may be at this point.
Good Will didn’t have anything so, I stopped at a place called Southern Pickers. This place had SO many nice pieces. Pretty much anything you could ask for but the prices? Are they serious or am I not understanding the value of these things? I found a beauty vanity from the 1920’s. It looked a little like this but was NO WHERE near as ornate as this..
The one I was looking at was very very plain, none of the gingerbread you see here, the 3 mirrors were plain and it looked like someone picked the piece from the garbage, painted it with white chalk paint and it distressed it a little because the distressing was actually too perfect.. Asking price? $180!.. I said to the guy are you serious? He said Im sure the owner will come down to $150.. I was like gee, big break there.. not…. Remember the one I saw was very very plain nothing as ornate as the above photo. Now, am I wrong? Is something like that actually worth that much!!?!??!
Next I was looking at a photo that was in a very heavy what looked to be come kind of high polished wood and the photo was a of a baby boy probably from around 1930. The backing was falling apart as I was holding it but the frame and photo weren’t in too bad shape. Asking price? $75 dollars! I said to the guy are you kidding? You actually want $75 for this? His response? “Well you can’t buy one in Walmart” My response? “No I can’t but I can’t print a photo off the internet for free and find a cheaper but just as pretty frame and make one myself for a whole lot less than this”… And I left.. Is it me?
Next, I went into a consignment shop in town. I found a really pretty wicker desk that had a hard desktop and everything else was white wicker. Price? $117!.. Are these people insane or am I SO not understand how much used items go for these days? Can someone PLEASE give me some insight?  Oh yeah, that Southern Pickers place? Also had a big old wagon wheel which would have looked great infront of my house.. They wanted $160… Not happening.. Im so disgusted..

  1. Hi! Finally got a computer!!! It is crazy what the prices are now on furniture. It doesn't seem like there are many bargains out there anymore. Can't wait to see your room! xo Diana

  2. When we first moved to the US over 10 years ago, you could get full oak table sets with chairs for under $100. And I'm talking good quality, well taken care of, not scratched, and even a glass top. About 5-6 years ago, the prices started to creep up ridiculously. Computer parts that used to cost about $20 were $80. Furniture was never lower than $120, even for beat-up dressers which didn't hold the drawers properly. I haven't been on a store like that in a while, but I can't imagine it's any cheaper. Don't be discouraged. Just look at different places and different alternatives. I'm sure you will come across a few goodies that will make the digging worth while.

  3. People will pay those prices. That's how they get away with pricing them like that. We've been to some shops with just outrageous prices and have seen the same items at other shops for half the price. Once you get your mind set on an item that you're looking for, be patient and keep looking. Eventually you will find something at a fair price. Being patient was a really tough thing for me to learn. :)-Laura

  4. Welcome back Diana you've been missed! Congratulations on the new computer :)…And no it surely doesn't seem like there are many bargains out there. I think these shop owners caught wind of everyone wanting to furnish their homes with used items and so then they raised their prices ridiculously.. I refuse to pay those prices so I'll just keep looking..

  6. Yup, people are paying those prices for older things. To get them at a good price you have to go to garage sales and auctions. Goodwill and other thrift stores are good places to look but even their prices are getting higher. Keep looking you will find something you like and can afford.
